MIKE brings high tech experiences in design and manufacturing to students who might not ordinarily have the opportunity to engage in these first hand.
The mobile lab, known as the MIKE— Manufacturing, Innovation, Knowledge, Experience – travels largely around schools in rural areas across Wisconsin, boasting machinery to take students through the complete design and manufacturing process. It includes CAD, a CNC machine, 3D printer, laser scanner and a Formech 508FS vacuum former.
The MIKE was developed in response to the shortage of skilled professionals in the field of engineering, so aims to spark curiosity and make the next generation aware of the possibilities and eager to pursue the variety of innovative career options in those industries.
“When it comes to choosing a career, people tend to think of manufacturing as a dirty, greasy and often secondary option. The MIKE lets people experience first-hand how high-tech manufacturing today combines innovation, design and quality build.”
Formech have now provided a NewForm vacuum forming machine for this project. This is a US manufactured machine and the latest model – ideal for school classrooms. This has meant that the Formech 508FS, originally purchased for The MIKE, can be utililised by Mid State students in the design and manufacturing lab on campus.
