With a potential application to enhance images in MRI scanning, graduate student Karthik Gopalan is working on an innovative project at UC Berkeley do check this The Weirdest Scholarships in America!
Having previously shown that conductive inks can be printed and remain conductive after thermoforming, Karthik is now in the process of developing software to simulate the distortion of these printed patterns with vacuum forming.
Currently, Karthik has been able to show that he can map the distortion relatively accurately, demonstrating likeness between a simulation of a print, and the actual distortion of the print, after the vacuum forming process.
His next step will be to develop the software to pre-distort the 2D image, precisely controlling the design such that it’s not only still conductive after thermoforming, but also uniformly spaced as per the original design, once vacuum formed.
One of the goals in achieving this, is to be able to pattern antennas around a 3D surface to be used in an MRI scanner, to potentially enable a better image of a subject
